Heritage in Schools
As part of the "Heritage in Schools" programme, heritage expert Nuala Madigan, visited our school during the Irish Peatland Conservation Council (I.P.C.C.) Week of 29th September 2014. She visited all three 3rd classes who studied various habitats in the local environment . The 3rd classes took part in the Discover Primary Science and Maths "Walk on Water", investigating invertebrates and their predators.
The 3rd and 4th classes did a canal walk, a Canal Study, identifying a freshwater habitat in their local area and learning about the history of the canal. The 5th class activity was "Bogs in the Classroom". The 1st classes looked at the "Water Minibeasts".
All of the 6th Classes visited the I.P.C.C. centre at Lullymore on Friday 10th October and investigated plants and animals of the bog. They learned about the formation of the bogs and went out onto Lodge Bog to make a "Bog in a Bottle"; and to experience what a bog is really like!
All of these activities were funded by the Board of Management of Sallins National School. On December 6th, Nuala will return again to the school and the three 2nd classes will take part in the Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland (S.E.A.I.) Programme for Schools.
